BiographyPost WWII San Francisco Bay area painter whose work evolved from complete abstraction in the 1940s to figurative works. He taught at the California College of Art (now the San Francisco Art Institute) in the late 1940s alongside Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and Ad Reinhardt. In the early 1950s, along with the painters Richard Diebenkorn and David Park, he broke with pure abstraction and began to worked in the style later known as Bay Area figurative painting.
