Alexander Robertson

Alexander Robertson had two brothers, Andrew and Archibald Robertson, who were also painters. Alexander studied initially under his elder brother Archibald before moving to London in 1791 to attend classes at the Royal Academy. He also studied miniatures alongside Samuel Shelley. In 1792, he left to join Archibald in New York, where the two brothers set up a well-attended private arts college. In 1799, he travelled to the Great Lakes and Canada, painting as he went.
