William M. Hart was taken to America at a very young age. He was initially employed to paint decorations on carriages but soon devoted himself entirely to painting portraits and then landscapes. As a result of a visit to Scotland, this latter became his preferred genre. He settled in Albany in 1848 and in New York in 1853. He became a member of the National Academy of Design in New York in 1858, and was also president of the Brooklyn Academy of Design. He has an important place among American painters.
