Teri Greeves

Kiowa, born 1970
BiographyBeadwork has always been part of Teri Greeves’ life. Her mom brought her home from the hospital in a specially made Kiowa cradle board and used a beaded diaper bag. Growing up, Greeves spent a substantial amount of time in her mom’s trading post on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Surrounded by Indigenous-made objects from across the country, Greeves expressed interest as a five-year old in trying her hand at beadwork. At the age of eight, when her Aunt gave her an initial lesson, teaching her to bead a pair of moccasins, Greeves’ love of beading was firmly cemented. It wasn’t until years later that she began experimenting with representational designs and first encountered a pair of Converse embellished with beadwork. At her mom’s encouragement, she made her own pair of beaded Chuck Taylors, initially for her own wear. She has since gone on to create beaded works meant as sculptural objects in their own right.
