BiographyFritz Eichenberg was born in 1901 in Cologne, Germany, where he spent his first eighteen years. He received his early training from the Municipal School of Applied Arts in Cologne before studying at the Staatliche Akademie fur Graphische Kunste in Leipzig.

From 1923 to 1933, Eichenberg worked in Berlin writing and illustrating books. In 1933, he settled in New York where he taught at the New School and Pratt Institute. In 1956, he became Chairman of the Department of Graphic Arts and founded the Pratt Graphic Arts Center in Manhattan. Ten years later, he served as Chairman of the Art Department at the University of Rhode Island.

Throughout his career he illustrated more than 100 books, predominantly working in lithography and wood engraving. Eichenberg’s illustrations have been featured by such publishers as The Heritage Club, Random House, Book of the Month Club, The Limited Editions Club, Kingsport Press, Aquarius Press and Doubleday.
