BiographyAmerican illustrator and wood engraver Bernard Brussel-Smith was born in Greenwich Village, New York in 1914. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for five years on a scholarship and later traveled to France on the Cresson Fellowship for two years. He developed color-relief etchings inspired by the work of William Blake in the studio of W. Stanley Hayter. By the late 1950s, Brussel-Smith visited the south of France regularly where he produced numerous town and genre scenes. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1952 and has held exhibitions there as well as at the Society of Graphic Artists and Artworks International in Thornhill, Ontario. [IFPDA]
