Painter (including gouache), watercolourist, draughtsman. Landscapes, landscapes with figures, waterscapes, harbour scenes.
George Henry Smillie was the son of the engraver James Smillie and younger brother of the landscape painter James D. Smillie. He travelled to the Rocky Mountains and Yosemite Valley in 1871 and then visited Florida. In 1864, he was an associate member of the National Academy and became a full member in 1882.
