Stefan Hirsch

German, 1899 - 1964
BiographyArtist and art teacher, Stefan Hirsch was born in Nuremberg, Germany. He received his training in art at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. From 1934 to 1940 he taught at Bennington College and from 1940 to 1946, he taught at the Art Students league in New York City. He was Chairman of the Art Department at Bard College at Annandale-on-Hudson in New York from 1946 through the 1950’s.

Hirsch exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. A mural produced by Hirsch for the Works Progress Administration Federal Arts Program in a South Carolina courthouse, had to be covered after it’s completion because some of the local people felt that the woman depicted as Justice resembled a mulatto.
