Label TextDr. Crow parades across the picture plane with a large rattlesnake draped over his shoulders. Painting on a piece of corrugated metal roofing, Sam Doyle, a resident of St. Helena, South Carolina, depicts one of the island’s legendary root doctors, who practiced a nature-based form of medicine and was in tune with both the physical and spiritual realms. In continuance of Gullah tradition, Dr. Crow warded against bad luck, offered guidance, and provided various positive remedies.
