Label TextMartine Gutierrez reimagines Xōchiquetzal—the Aztec Goddess of youthful beauty, fertility, crafts, and female sexuality—for a twenty-first-century audience. Positioned against a golden backdrop with elaborate hair and costuming, Xōchiquetzal captivates the viewer with her gaze. The decorative motifs on the artist-embellished frame complement the ornamentation of the deity’s costume, while her hand gestures are reminiscent of poses in fashion magazines. Through this updated interpretation, Gutierrez demonstrates how a religious mythological icon can still express the multi-dimensionality of women today.
Martine Gutierrez reinterpreta a Xochiquétzal —la diosa azteca de la belleza juvenil, la fertilidad, las artesanías y la sexualidad femenina— para un público del siglo XXI. Situada contra un fondo dorado, con peinado y vestimenta elaborados, Xochiquétzal cautiva al espectador con su mirada.
