Label TextMartine Gutierrez photographs herself seated against a lush, green backdrop, donning a wardrobe that at first glance looks like clothing worn by Central American Indigenous women. However, Gutierrez wears high-end designer clothes and items she purchased from Goodwill thrift stores. When Gutierrez reproduced this image in a magazine, she followed cues of fashion magazines and listed brands such as Versace, Vivienne Westwood, and Prada alongside Goodwill. The artist plays with our perceptions of identities and brands and alludes to the fact that mainstream fashion often appropriates Indigenous cultures and thrusts them into a clunky mishmash without regard for tradition or context.
