Label TextSan Luis (St. Louis), la “Puerta al Oeste”, era una próspera ciudad y centro mercantil durante el siglo XIX. Tanto exploradores, como tramperos, cazadores, comerciantes y colonizadores, pasaban por el concurrido muelle del Río Misisipi.

Leon Pomarede fue un francés que emigró a los Estados Unidos alrededor de 1830, y vivió y trabajó en San Luis por más de 50 años. Allí, capturó el constante ajetreo del tránsito de las lanchas de transporte. En esta pintura, el artista esta observando desde el lado del río de Illinois, mirando hacia el oeste, en dirección a la ciudad localizada en el banco opuesto.
