Label TextLandscape depicts loggers floating rafts down what is most likely the Saint Lawrence River, near Montreal, Canada. The son of an African American mother and a Scottish- Canadian father, Robert Seldon Duncanson established his artistic career in Cincinnati, but temporarily relocated to Canada during the Civil War, searching for a place where racism would not affect his profession as a painter. When Duncanson arrived in Montreal he was warmly received, and he exhibited his works there to great acclaim.
