Label TextSince the 1950s, Alex Katz has summered in rural Maine. He was struck by the number of cows he encountered during these vacations. Like other Pop artists, here, Katz makes his subject matter something he sees on a daily basis.

Executed in his characteristic flat style, but made as a freestanding sculpture, Katz transports everyday scenery into the gallery. Able to make multiple copies of the same image using the screen printing process, Katz now has 25 lounging cows scattered throughout collections around the world.
