Label TextThomas Moran visited Yellowstone and the Wyoming Territory in 1871, traveling with a federally funded survey. Modern railway transportation made Moran’s trip there possible, but in this panoramic vista, he left out the Union Pacific Railway terminal and the whole town of Green River and imagined a time before the railway had been built. Moran never met the Ute and Shoshone peoples who lived, and still live, in this region, and he inserted Plains Indian people into the composition instead. Their distinctive regalia was more recognizable and appealing to his non-Native patrons and audiences on the East Coast.
