Label TextDiane Edison drew this expressive portrait of fellow artist Luis Cruz Azaceta. Starting on black paper, she used a white pencil to reveal his features. Edison said, “I work [the drawing] up slowly, keeping it dark, keeping just the ghost of the image as long I can.” These simple materials allow for intimate detail, and the large scale seems to echo Edison’s regard for her subject.
