Label TextJohn La Farge’s engagement with this subject began in the mid-1870s when he created interior decorative schemes for the new Trinity Church in Boston, including stained glass windows. Around 1880, this work garnered a commission for another stained glass window, Peonies Blown in the Wind, for railroad magnate Henry G. Marquand (now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art). La Farge reprised the theme, with subtle variations, at least six times, including this 1890 watercolor painting, Peonies in a Breeze.
