Label TextBorn and raised on a cotton farm in Earle, Arkansas, Carroll Cloar used childhood memories and family photographs as inspiration for his work. With his signature style of thinly applied bright colors, patterns, and shallow planes, he represented Southern rural life. In this work, his childhood friend Charlie Mae, an African American girl he depicted in more than two dozen works, prepares for a major life event among the lushly patterned landscape.
