Collectively, the family made a lasting impact on American art through the establishment of museums and art academies, as well as through their associations with many important members of early American society.

Peale painted numerous self-portraits throughout his career, starting when he was only 13 years old and continuing until age 78. In this self-portrait, he is 68 years old.
