Label TextIn an era when American art was dominated by European Modernism and abstract styles, Luigi Lucioni drew inspiration from early Italian Renaissance painters. His painstaking technique and attention to detail can be seen in this portrait of Bob Elser, who was the romantic partner of popular New York bandleader Ted Straetter, a close friend of Lucioni. The casual quality of the pose, the tenderness of fingers grasping the ankle, and the delicate brushstrokes defining each wisp of arm hair make Bob Elser come to life.
