Label TextPat Steir describes her paintings as “pictures of nothing.” Making no attempt to depict specific images, she sets up certain limitations for her works by selecting the colors, the scale of the canvas, and the actions she uses to apply paint. Steir removes herself from the paintings, allowing gravity and chance, forces more powerful than herself, to create the final product. In this sense, she is capturing nature at work—something she describes as a kind of ongoing spiritual pursuit.
