The boy may be from a working class family, as implied by his outfit, which is likely his “Sunday best,” while the girl’s red dress and matching hat reflects a higher social class. Despite their different backgrounds, the children seem to be sharing a secret, perhaps something mischievous, as the boy’s smirk might suggest.
