Label Text"Do not try to paint the grandiose thing. Paint the commonplace so that it will be distinguished.” – William Merritt Chase

This landscape reflects Chase’s focus on depicting a commonplace scene with a poetic mood. Chase visited Polling, a small village in the Bavarian Alps, while studying at the Royal Academy in Munich. The roiling clouds create a sense of foreboding, painted in broad brushstrokes that emphasize their churning motion. The limited range of earthy colors further intensifies the mood of the landscape.

“No intente pintar cosas grandiosas.
