Label TextIn this towering installation, notice how the bright red Plexiglas in Untitled, 1989 emphasizes its clean edges while the reflection of the copper dissolves their rectangular shapes. Untitled, 1989 belongs to a body of works Judd called “stacks,” which are designed to interact with the spaces in which they are placed: with the light in the space, with the flat wall behind, and with the people surrounding the works.

Donald Judd was a preeminent figure of Minimalism, a movement that focused on simple geometric forms, color, and space, in order to clear the work of preconceived symbols or associations. Like many Minimalists, Judd embraced the use of industrial materials. He saw this as part of a more democratic design, with each unit equal and evenly spaced as well as created by materials familiar to all.
