Label TextOklahoma-based artist Jean Bales dedicated herself to painting the history of her Iowa people who were relocated from northern lands in the nineteenth century to what is now known as Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. In Untitled, Bales paints multiple generations of Iowa women slicing and drying a large harvest of a type of squash called “delicata.” Bales depicted each figure and the two dogs individually through unique dress, hair style, and role in the activity.
